Belachew Mekuria

Belachew Mekuria, received his LLB from Addis Ababa University and an MSc degree from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden on land management. As a Chevening scholar, he gained his LLM degree from the University of Essex in International Human Rights Law and recently has completed his graduate degree in conflict, security and development from King’s College London.

Belachew’s professional career includes Head of Department, Faculty Dean and Lecturer at Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia where he has initiated projects on human rights, legal aid and other community services. He has worked as a defence lawyer at the Amhara National Regional State Supreme Court, and programme officer for Action Professionals’ Association for the People on a legal empowerment program. Belachew has also served as a lecturer at Addis Ababa University Institute for Human Rights on the MA program in Human Rights where he taught a module on human rights and development. Currently, he is a PhD research student at the University of Surrey, UK
