Call for scholarship applications – BIEA Advanced Research Methods Summer School-2017

The British Institute in Eastern Africa invites applications for a scholarship for the Advanced Research Methods Summer School- 2017

The scholarship is intended for graduate students in the social sciences and humanities based at universities and research institutions in Eastern and Southern African region. The goal of the scholarship is to give an opportunity to the graduate students to get advanced practical and field-based training in research methods. The three-week long course takes place at the British Institute in Eastern Africa’s Nairobi premises and at a field site at the Kenyan Coast.

Description of the programme:

During this three week programme, students will spend ten days at a coastal field site putting into practice various research methods. The other ten days will be spent in Nairobi covering research methodologies, ethics, approaches to African studies by various disciplines, archival research exercises at the National Archives and; short writing, publishing and presentation workshops in the period after the field-work.

Modules on offer include:

  • Approaches to African Studies by various Disciplines (Anthropology, Archaeology, History and Political Science);
  • Introduction to field research; Practical sampling, mapping and village surveys exercises;
  • Practical archaeological surveys and excavation exercises;
  • Practical ethnographic field work exercises;
  • Practical oral and life history interviewing and focus group discussion exercises and;
  • Ethics, permits and practicalities of doing research in Africa

Attendance of all classes, taking part in the set exercises and undertaking tasks given is compulsory.

Program duration: 3 weeks (8th July, 2017 – 29th July, 2017)
The scholarship includes:

  • Tuition fee
  • Course materials
  • Accommodation
  • Three meals a day
  • Ground transportation while in Kenya

The applicant WILL cover the following expenses:

  1. Travel to and from Kenya
  2. Visa charges
  3. Travel Insurance

Maximum number of scholarships that can be awarded: 2

Deadline for electronic application: 17th March 2017
The applications will be evaluated by 17th April 2017 and applicants will be notified about the results by the 21st of April 2017. All decisions are binding.

The British Institute will not consider applications that are submitted after the deadline and/or are incorrect or incomplete or ineligible.
