Minor Grants BIEA minor grants are available to support original research, in any field of the humanities and social sciences, across the region. Grants are normally awarded as contributions towards actual research costs and do not include institutional overheads or any stipendiary element for applicants. Priority is given to researchers based in the UK or eastern Africa. Publication costs are NOT eligible for funding. The Director (director@biea.ac.uk) is at all times happy to advise potential applicants. Applicants should also consult the advice for applicants. The normal maximum sum awarded is £1,000 sterling or its equivalent in local currency. In exceptional circumstances, where a compelling case is made, a grant of up to £1,500 may be made. Grants are awarded biannually, with a closing date of 31st April 2010 for projects which are to begin before 1st November 2010 and 31st October 2010 for projects to begin before 1st May 2011. It is the applicants' responsibility to send a copy of his/her application to the nominated referee and to ensure that references reach BIEA before the relevant closing date. Postgraduate students applying may use one referee from within their institution – this should normally be their supervisor. Late applications will not be considered. Applicants will normally be informed of the outcome of their applications within one month of the closing date. Download a grant application form here |
