As an institution with over fifty years of interdisciplinary research experience, BIEA can offer unparalleled advice on appropriate research techniques as well as on the practicalities of conducting research in Eastern Africa. We have long-term experience of dealing with research clearance applications and a wide network of contacts in regional institutions. We also have a broad base of members and researchers with extensive knowledge of the region and can use this to facilitate networking. We strongly encourage researchers to introduce themselves to us by contacting the Director and we hope to be able to assist whenever possible. BIEA and its staff can also be cited as affiliates in research applications and the Director can be consulted on such issues. Technical Staff In addition to general advice, we also have a number of members of staff with specific technical knowledge. Alongside the research specialisims of the Director and Assistant director, we currently employ a survey technician, Mr Benson Kimeu, who specialises in GIS mapping and can assist with the creation of maps and images of all kinds. Mr Kimeu is also an experienced fieldworker with extensive knowledge of planning archaeological and other sites of various kinds. We also employ a highly skilled mechanic and driver, Mr Joseph Matua, who has many years experience of driving and maintaining vehicles in difficult terrain. Mr Matua is also a very experienced fieldworker having traveled widely throughout the region on numerous BIEA projects. Both our survey technician and mechanic/driver can be seconded to research projects by arrangement with the Director.
