Mapping and GIS facility

mapping facilityBIEA holds an unparalleled store of regional survey maps covering many parts of Eastern Africa, particularly Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We also hold a wide range of historic maps, plans and diagrams built up over our fifty year existence. Visiting researchers are welcome to consult our maps which are currently stored within our mapping facility.

In addition, BIEA employs a specialist survey and GIS expert, Mr Benson Kimeu, who has extensive fieldwork experience having conducted digital surveys at both the regional and site level scales. Mr Kimeu is also a highly skilled GIS technician who has constructed high quality mapping solutions for a wide-range of projects. We currently use Arc-GIS software accompanied by LisCad and Adobe applications to create digital maps to order from simple line drawings to more complex GIS databases and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).

Mr Kimeu is also available to accompany projects into the field to advise on appropriate survey methods and BIEA survey equipment, including EDM and Trimble GPS unit can be hired at a small cost. Researchers wishing to make use of our mapping facilities can contact the Survey/GIS Technician. Conditions and charges for GIS map making and field survey can be downloaded here.
